The European Banking Authority (EBA) today launched a public consultation proposing to revise the EBA Guidelines on product oversight and governance (POG) arrangements for retail banking products. The proposed revision aims to prevent greenwashing and ensure that financial institutions meet the highest standards of business conduct when offering products with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) features to consumers. The consultation runs until 9 October 2025.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) today published a report, in which it reviewed the standardised terms for the most common services related to payment accounts, as mandated by the Payment Accounts Directive (PAD). These standardised terms, which the EBA had issued in 2018, aim at making it easier for consumers to make informed choices by being able to compare payment accounts fees and offers, including on a cross-border basis. The review finds that the standardised terms remain fit-for-purpose across the European Union.

EBA identifies payment fraud, indebtedness and de-risking as key issues affecting consumers in the EU
The European Banking Authority (EBA) published today the 9th edition of its biennial Consumer Trends Report for 2024/25. The Report has identified payment fraud, indebtedness, and de-risking as the most important issues affecting EU consumers. The Report is based on information provided by the national authorities of the 27 EU Member States, selected national and EU consumer associations, EU industry associations, national ombudsmen, as well as quantitative data from a variety of sources, including for the first time the EBA’s new Retail Risk Indicators, which the EBA publishes separately since 2022 with a view to identify potential consumer harm.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) published today the results of a fact finding exercise on the creditworthiness assessment (CWA) practices of non-bank lenders (NBLs). The exercise is a follow-up to the Consumer Trends Report published in April 2023 and aimed at gaining insight into the extent to which NBLs contribute to over-indebtedness and arrears. The EBA finds that, while some NBLs might service segments of the population that may have limited opportunities to access traditional banks for credit, a significant number of the surveyed NBLs appear to apply inadequate practices for information gathering and verification during their CWAs.

The EBA extends the existing Joint Committee Guidelines on complaints handling to credit servicers
The European Banking Authority (EBA) published today final Guidelines that extend the existing Joint Committee Guidelines on complaints handling (JC Guidelines) to credit servicers under the new Credit Servicers Directive. When handling complaints from borrowers, credit services are required to apply the same effective and transparent procedures that have been applied for more than a decade to other firms in the banking, insurances and securities sectors.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) today published a Report on structured deposits in the European Union (EU), under the Markets for Financial Instruments Regulation (MiFIR) to monitor this particular market segment. The Report finds that in more than half of the 27 national markets in the EU, structured deposits do not exist, and that the EU market remains very small at an aggregate level, with only €16.7 billion of structured deposits sold between 1 January and 30 September 2023 – the reference period of the Report -, and 95% of which was concentrated in only 4 EU Member States.
